S1E3 – Tuesday Topics with Paul Edwards: Ethical Issues during the Pandemic

There are lots of legal and ethical issues that concern people who are blind that have come to the fore during the corona emergency. On Tuesday Topics this week we explore some of these.
State guidelines exist that propose ways of choosing who will live and who will die if there aren’t enough ventilators or other resources. Some of these have people with disabilities placed lower than others. What do we think of this and what should we do about it?
Children who are blind are being home schooled on platforms that are not accessible and some states have essentially sought to limit the Civil Rights protections that guarantee full inclusion for kids who are blind. What do we think and what should we do?
Lots of the information that is shown on tv screens during the emergency is not accessible. Because it is not designated as “emergency information” stations appear to be able to show such information without any regard for whether it discriminates against people who are blind or have low vision. What can we do about it?
